Munich SmartCity App

About the city. As part of the EU project, Munich becomes a Smart City – and the popular Munich app becomes the Munich SmartCity App. For users, this means visual improvements and improved content, a more user-friendly experience, and new features that will help get around the city better.

Goal

Munich’s new SmartCity app was developed to provide one single point of entry to all local and all smart services that are relevant to them.

Implementation period. App went into service in January 2018.

Fact

For Neuaubing-Westkreuz/Freiham, the Munich area of the Smarter Together project, the key number is “20”: in this pilot area, Smarter Together aims to reduce CO2 emissions by more than 20% and increase the use of renewable energy to more than 20%, while increasing energy efficiency by more than 20%. Munich’s goal in Neuaubing-Westkreuz/Freiham is carbon Neutral by 2050.

Solutions

The main screen of the app displays information about the user’s current location and the smart services offered there. The mobility service is one of the main functions of the app: In the interactive city map, it is possible to find public transport, bicycle rentals, car-sharing services, and walking paths on an interactive city map. Another central function is the integration of digital municipal services (eGovernment services). In addition to new services, the app provides users with tips on the sightseeing spots, events, and movie programs.

In addition, the Munich SmartCity App is the central point of access to services and smart data from all the innovations developed within the framework of the Smarter Together project that is of interest to Munich residents – for example, air quality measurement data or parking information measured by sensors that are fixed to smart lampposts installed in the project area.

Users can also personalize the Munich SmartCity App using their own M-Login.

Challenges

Planning a project such as the Munich SmartCity app with various stakeholders, developing and coordinating a common timeline was a difficult task.

Another problem was the high complexity of integrated services, the need to solve various interfaces and dependencies between partner services or modules.

Implementing a prototype for discussion with stakeholders is very useful in solving these kinds of problems.

Timeline

The further development of the Munich SmartCity App is an ongoing process.
