Milpark Pedestrian Bridge

About the city. Johannesburg has the third worst traffic in the world, beaten by only by Beijing and Mexico City. There is also a large concentration of cars and taxis in the city.

Goal

The main aim of the bridge is to encourage and promote safe pedestrian movement and connectivity, in particular connecting the Milpark precinct to the Rea Vaya Phase 2 trunk route.

Implementation period. The project was completed in 2019.

Fact

Traffic volumes on Empire Road, Barry Hertzog Avenue and Annet Road acted as strong barriers. They obstructed pedestrian movement, placing pedestrians at risk and creating poor pedestrian connectivity to important buildings.

Solutions

Why was the bridge needed? In the Barry Hertzog Avenue area there is an exceptionally busy traffic volume and, at the same time, a combination of land uses including retail, commercial offices, residential, health facilities, education, hotels, social facilities, public open space, etc. It was necessary to ensure the safety of pedestrians and communication with key social facilities, such as Wits, University of Johannesburg and Milpark Hospital.

What has been done? Relocation of stormwater drainage, the establishing of the bridge deck, ramps and staircases, the installation of handrails, columns, footings, lights, guardrails and environmental upgrades, including paving and kerbing.

Team

The Milpark pedestrian bridge’s construction is part of the Milpark Precinct UrbanDesign Framework which forms part of the Empire Perth Corridor. The City of Johannesburg.

Timeline

The design phase is to be completed in the 2016/2017 financial year.

The project was completed at the end of 2019.
