About the city. In cities such as Amsterdam, there is a growing demand for storage facilities and a shortage of them. However, there is an abundance of unused storage space in people’s homes and businesses, even more than the total number of square meters in self-service warehouses.

Goal

The aim of the project is to make unused urban space more effective, make the storage system easier and cheaper while creating less pollution because of a decrease in rides to remote storage locations.

Implementation period. The project was launched in 2016.

Fact

  • Amsterdam first noticed the potential in the sharing economy in 2013, when a survey of 1,300 adults found that more than 84% of Amsterdam respondents were willing to participate in at least one type of shared consumption.
  • The Netherlands has the most populous self-storage market in Europe and the third-largest number of self-storage facilities overall.

Solutions

Djeepo is a digital online platform where people can share unused space. Djeepo finds private storage spaces (basements, attics and spare rooms) for those who need extra space for their belongings. Users store their items nearby, saving money. Owners (hosts) earn extra income by sharing their unused space. Guests in Amsterdam can also store their luggage in one of the Djeepo storage hosts. When space is shared, there is less movement of goods and more interaction and trust between people.
