Blockchain shared parking

About the city. Bucheon is the satellite city of South Korea’s capital Seoul. The city uses a blockchain solution under its smart city initiative to address the parking problems in the area. With participation from the local government and companies, the solution enabled shared parking in the Sangsalmi area of Bucheon.

Goal

The main aim of the project is to provide the city with an effective parking system and solve the problems of parking difficulties.

Through this project, it is expected to establish 22 village enterprises in Bucheon city, create more than 300 new jobs, and have an economic effect of 49 billion won per year.

Implementation period. The first preliminary project was conducted in February 2020.

Fact

  • There are problems such as illegal parking and damage to the city’s aesthetic due to chronic parking difficulties.
  • The city of Bucheon takes part in a Smart City Challenge. It is a project that solves existing urban problems with ideas discovered by private companies and local governments. In the preliminary project, a business plan is established for one year and pilot operation of a representative project (budget 1 billion) is pursued. It is a business that is pursuing a smart city business for 15 years (budget 3 billion ~ 200 billion). “Shared Parking and Mobility Platform” is the part of Smart City Challenge.

Solutions

The parking lot was shared around the village with Technopark parking lot and residents’ priority parking space in the village and provided a parking agency or shared mobility (shared car, shared quickboard) service when using the Technopark parking lot.

The service is available through a mobile application called CityPass and is underpinned by blockchain technology. Now, the solution will be implemented in 13 other areas of Bucheon, which aims to promote ‘mobility-as-a-service’ in the city. The initiative is one of several smart city projects.

Challenges

Sangsalmi Village, located in Samjeong-dong, Bucheon, was designated as a housing redevelopment maintenance area in ’09, and it was a place that suffered a chronic parking shortage in the original city for a long time until it was released in ’18. The project of sheared parking was released only in 2020
