About the city. Greenwich Borough Council in South-East London has launched a project to study the potential impact of the Internet of things (IoT) litter bin on the garbage collection services offered by the area.
Goal
The aim of the project is to increase the efficiency of bin collection service in the borough.
Implementation period. Bins installation started in 2018.
Fact
Waste management in London is estimated to grow by a million tonnes each year: according to figures released by the UK government, this will require London’s local authorities to collect an additional million tonnes of waste- considering that the city’s residents continue to produce about the same amount of garbage per person. This is an additional 500,000 trucks full of garbage that are added every year, and the city’s garbage collection and recycling infrastructure is already strained.
Solutions
The Royal Borough of Greenwich has installed 18 PEL Waste Reduction Equipment’s solar-powered IoT SolarStreetBin.
The PEL120SSB solar-powered IoT litter container, supplied by PEL (UK) Rentals Ltd, comes with a compaction system, a sensor for measuring the level of litter in the container, and a wireless transmitter that transmits fill level data via PEL BriteBin™ software to the County’s litter collection team.
The PEL120SSB IOT SolarStreetBin™ bins have been installed in 9 busy high street locations throughout the area and will replace the existing two-chamber bins used in these locations. The bins are deployed in pairs, with one bin designated for general waste and the second bin at the station marked for recycling.
IoT SolarStreetBin™ collects garbage in a standard 120-litre wheeled bin that allows a standard comb lift-equipped litter collection trucks to service the bin. The solar-powered bin compactor increases its ability to hold garbage up to 10 times as much as a usual bin. This increase in throughput will lead to a drastic reduction in the number of visits required to maintain the bins.
Each IoT SolarStreetBin ™ bin is equipped with a bin fill level sensor linked to the BriteBin™reporting software. The software allows the Royal Borough of Greenwich to detect when bins are full and send collection trucks only to these bins.

Timeline
- The combination of warnings and increased capacity ill reduce garbage collection visits, reduce garbage collection traffic and associated emissions, increase efficiency, and ultimately reduce the overall cost of garbage collection in the area.
- Bins can be found in Wilton Road in Abbey Wood, outside Marks And Spencers and Boots in Eltham High Street, at the entrance to Cutty Sark Gardens, in Greenwich High Road, outside Seabream Fish Shop in Shooters Hill Road, at the entrances of Woolwich Arsenal DLR and mainline stations and in Wickham Lane in Plumstead.
