Goal

The goal of San Diego’s Public Access Defibrillation Program and San Diego Project Heart Beat is to improve the survivability of sudden cardiac arrest victims in San Diego by placing defibrillators in some public spaces like city facilities, businesses, tourists attractions and facilities, healthcare facilities, education facilities.

Moreover, the goal is to make Automated External Defibrillators (AED) accessible throughout our community.

Implementation period. The program was launched in 2001.

Sudden Cardiac Arrest is a significant unsolved public health problem and a leading cause of death in the United States.

Solutions

The program was created to offer public and private businesses and organizations a solution to implement life-saving programs affordably and easily.

What is an Automated External Defibrillator (AED)? It is an easy-to-use, automated device that delivers a life-saving electric shock to the heart to halt rapid and chaotic heart activity. Usually, it is known as sudden cardiac arrest and restores normal heart rhythm.

Moreover, within the framework of the project, a special application was developed that can be used by those who are trained in CPR. The City of San Diego has united with San Diego County to offer the free PulsePoint mobile app that alerts CPR-trained bystanders if someone nearby is having a sudden cardiac arrest that may require CPR.

The City of San Diego and San Diego Fire-Rescue Department. Partners in San Diego Project Heart Beat are San Diego Fire Fighters Local 145, the County of San Diego, the American Heart Association and AED Brands, LLC.

Timeline

The program’s goal was to place at least 250 AED units. Now there are more than 9,500 AEDs throughout the region. Additionally, clinical studies have proved the survival rate increases to 30% to 70% when an automated external defibrillator is used on a victim three minutes from the onset of a cardiac arrest.

San Diego Project Heart Beat is a nationally and internationally recognized program. It has set the standard for AED program management and has become a life-saving role model for Miami FL., Nashville TN., Minneapolis, MN.

According to known data, the project saved at least 150 lives.
