Ismay Reserve, WestConnex Legacy project

Sydney, Australia

About the city. In 2019, a new highway was opened — the New M4 has been upgraded to have smoother road surfaces and, for the first time, motorists can access the New M4 heading towards the city from the new Hill Road on-ramp, from Sydney Olympic Park.

Ismay Reserve is the first park to open as part of the WestConnex Legacy project. The project aims to provide safe and high-quality open spaces for communities impacted by the construction of the New M4.

Implementation period. Preliminary workshops were held in early March 2017 for community members who expressed interest. Ismay Reserve opened at the end of September 2019. The WestConnex Legacy project is active.

Fact

Ismay Reserve is literally under a major road.

Solutions

Parks and squares are being built as part of the project. As mentioned earlier, the first Park was Ismay Reserve.

What has been done?

The 2.5-hectare park in Homebush has become a nice place where citizens can relax and spend time with children. What is in the Ismay Reserve?

  • a children’s playground
  • cycle paths
  • all-weather table tennis
  • BBQ facilities
  • exercise stations
  • a futsal court
  • toilets.

Team

NSW Government, Australian Government. M4 East Urban Design Review Panel, consisting of representatives from the Office of Government Architect NSW, Heritage Council, RMS, independent experts, and councils.

Timeline

In September 2019, the construction of the second park within the project began. A new park in Haberfield has already opened in Sydney’s west. There’s a brand new playground, drinking fountains, a shadow sail, and more. Moreover, the territory is quite “green”. About 60 trees and more than 100 shrubs were planted.
