Digital Infrastructure in Wuppertal

About the city. Wuppertal is a city in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, in and around the Wupper valley, east of Düsseldorf and south of the Ruhr. With a population of approximately 350,000, it is the largest city in the Bergisches Land.

Goal

The aim of the project is to create a digital infrastructure as a new communication medium between the city and citizens in public space.

Implementation period. The project started in 2015.

Fact

Digital infrastructure easily consumes resources such as paper or advertising services, reduces traffic congestion through intelligent traffic routing, and also provides sustainable green solutions– such as mossback panels – to improve urban air quality.

Solutions

To support the municipality of Wuppertal with their goals, Ströer together with Prismatronic provided the city with the necessary digital infrastructure. The 8 Prismatronic’s 11m² displays have been produced using the very latest in LED technology. The screens were manufactured by PrismaChin. They incorporate BBM software for enhanced monitoring solutions and improved operations management.

The dynamic displays were set up on strategic high-traffic sites to maximise impact and visibility.

Display content switches between advertising, editorial content and local news bulletins, upcoming events, local issues, weather forecasts, warnings. All this has been created in collaboration with the communication services of the Wuppertal.

Additionally, in cooperation with the Wuppertal Marketing Gmbh, the famous sights of the city are also displayed in the foreground. The system is financed by advertising revenues and comes at no extra cost for the city.

Challenges

During the implementation, it became clear that creating current, newsworthy content and picking up on important local issues in order to meet residents‘ needs and concerns and providing them with information with added value is important.
