Ten Gigabit Adelaide

About the city. The Adelaide Council’s ambitious program aims to make Adelaide one of the easiest Australian cities to do business in and inspire Adelaide companies to sell their products and services around the world, as well as attract universities, research centres and top talent.

Goal

The aim of the project is to provide Adelaide city businesses with world-class digital infrastructure that will help create jobs and boost the economy.

Implementation period. The project was completed in October 2020.

Fact

The network is one of the Australian city’s key strategic projects and to connect 1000 buildings has included the installation of 82km of cable, 26,000 spliced fibres, 431 new joints and eight high-density 10G core sites.

Solutions

The Ten Gigabit Adelaide project was launched in December 2017, and TPG selected as the City of Adelaide’s deployment partner in 2018. The Ten Gigabit Adelaide network has been installed across the CBD and North Adelaide. The project was completed on time and within budget in October 2020.

Using existing underground pits and conduits where possible, or installing new pits where required, fibre-optic cables were stretched through conduits and into buildings. An optical fibre connection point was installed in each of the 1,000 selected buildings to serve multiple businesses. As each business orders a service, they are provided with a unique fibre extension that provides direct access to a symmetrical 10 Gbps transmission link and a range of data and telecommunications services.

There were no costs for building owners or businesses to install the network.

Challenges

In August 2018, the Australian Federal Government notified telecommunications companies that the government would not support the use of certain Vendor equipment in fifth-generation (5G) mobile networks. Huawei was not specifically mentioned, but it is understood that the government would take steps to block the use of Huawei network equipment only in 5G mobile networks.

Huawei equipment is widely used in all telecommunications networks around the world; in Australia, this includes Optus, Vocus, Vodafone, and TPG. The government has not expressed any concerns about fixed-line telecommunications networks such as the Ten Gigabit Adelaide network.
