SIM Maternidade Platform

Campina Grande, Brazil

About the city. The Mayor of Campina Grande, Bruno Cunha Lima, believes that Maternidade SIM will provide even better follow-up for pregnant women in Campina Grande. The combination of the technology with the entire city’s support and health network will promote more care, attention and respect.

Goal

The aim of the project is to reduce the number of hospitalisations of women with high-risk pregnancies by taking advantage of mobile technologies.

Implementation period. The project was launched in 2022.

Fact

  • The mortality rate in Brazil in 2017 was 64.5 deaths per 100,000 live births. The country must reduce its maternal mortality by 50% to reach this target of 30 deaths per 100,000 live births. In this scenario, prenatal care plays an important role in preventing complications during pregnancy.

Solutions

SIM Maternidade, an application that allows pregnant women in the city of Campina Grande to follow prenatal care, access information about vaccines and other educational information, in addition to their appointments and record their symptoms and test results, was officially launched in September 2023, by MTM Tecnologia, in collaboration with the city hall of Campina Grande, in Paraíba, with technology from Qualcomm.

In the last phase of the SIM Maternity project, healthcare providers can also access patient results, assess the need for future procedures or follow-up, and take action before the patient’s next appointment. The app was created in the run-up to the 5×5 TecSummit exhibition last December.

The SIM Maternidade application developed by QUALCOMM Serviços de Telecomunicações Ltda can help reduce maternal and infant mortality in Brazil. In SUS basic health units, teams often face delays in providing care because of the large number of patients. SIM allows pregnant women and health workers to take proactive measures and prevent symptoms from worsening. For example, test results available in a patient’s medical record help prevent cases of gestational diabetes and pre-eclampsia. The app also serves as an educational portal for pregnant women. Brazil has seen an increase in maternal mortality in recent years, with a rate of 107 deaths per 100,000 births in 2021. Introducing SIM Maternidade into the country’s public health network could significantly reduce these statistics and simplify care for pregnant women.

“The app does not replace SUS services, but it does reinforce communication between patients and healthcare professionals. Our expectation is that the app will increase women’s adherence to prenatal care, which will result in fewer complications for mother and baby during labor and postpartum. The app should serve up to 80% of pregnant women treated by SUS in Campina Grande,” says Gustavo Perez, CEO of MTM Tecnologia.
