Cohda Wireless’s V2X Technology

About the city. The priority of the fire department n the city of Ludwigsburg (pop. 85,000) is the first fully practical application of V2X technology in Germany and making Ludwigsburg a showcase of a city that already relies on innovative C-ITS technologies and intelligent traffic lights, thus preparing for its future as a Smart city.

Goal

The aim of the project is to allow fire trucks and rescue service teams to go to accidents and emergencies quicker, saving more people’s lives. Also, the city aims to optimize the traffic flow.

Implementation period. The project’s pilot started in 2019.

Fact

Average daily traffic volume on state roads in the Ludwigsburg administrative district approx. 10,240 vehicles (state average approx. 5,350 vehicles per day)

Solutions

All traffic lights and intersections in Ludwigsburg were equipped with Cohda MK5 Road-Side Units, which correspond to the equivalent MK5 On-Board units in fire trucks and rescue vehicles to provide them with a green light on the way to emergencies. Cohda technology allows to exchange information directly with approaching vehicles using DSRC (standardized radio).   ACTROS traffic light control units were equipped with the necessary program that automatically determines the priorities of fire engines as they pass.

The system works by sending messages relaying position and speed, several times per second, from emergency vehicles to the traffic light controller. There the signals are processed and compared with the scenarios stored in the programming.
